Manufacturing and health care lead new South Worcester County economic development plan

These cities and towns can now apply for federal grant assistance.
Communities in South Worcester County can now apply for public works grants and economic assistance programs, as the U.S. Economic Development Administration has approved the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy for the region.
The strategy, developed by the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and the CEDS Strategy Committee, identified four key industries for the region in the next five years: manufacturing; professional scientific and technical services; education, health care and social assistance; and agriculture.
According to the CEDS document, the region includes 40 communities, from Princeton to the north, south to the Rhode Island and Connecticut border, east to Mendon and Blackstone and West to Warren and Hardwick.
Now, the communities will apply for approval from the federal government to create an economic development district to create access to additional grant funding.
“This approved CEDS plan will lead to additional investment in Central Mass. and Southern Worcester County that will create jobs and expand the tax base within the 40-community CEDS region,” said Timothy Murray, Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce president and CEO.
