A section of Worcester’s Main Street in front of Clark University is set for $2.3 million worth of state-funded improvements.
The proposed complete streets project includes roadway and sidewalk improvements on Main Street between Beaver and Wyman streets, according to a proposal from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. The proposed construction will also include upgrading traffic signals at Maywood and Crystal streets and Woodland Street, reconstruction of wheelchair ramps, streetscape enhancements and milling and overlaying approximately 1,250 feet of roadway.
Bicycle accommodations, consisting of a five foot bike lane, have been provided in accordance with applicable design guides. Bike paths and sidewalks are consistent with the state’s healthy transportation policy, according to Frederick Moseley, a principal for Stantec that is working on the project, and are important to work into projects as they are done even if they do not immediately connect to other bicycle paths.
“If we don’t start somewhere it will never get done. So as the projects come through they want to ensure there are sidewalks and bicycle accommodations,” he said.
The design was discussed at a public meeting held in Worcester Tuesday night.
