The L.S. Starrett Co. in Athol has hired manufacturing industry veteran Matthew Wells to a newly created position of director of operations and continuous improvement.
Founded in 1880, Starrett manufactures precision measuring tools, gauges, and meteorology systems. It employees more than 1,600 people and has five manufacturing facilities in Massachusetts, Georgia, Ohio, Minnesota, and California. The publicly traded company had $254 million in revenues for fiscal 2022, an increase of 16% from the previous year, and $14.9 million in profit, down from $15.5 million in fiscal 2021.
Wells is a Western Massachusetts native and has more than 25 years of manufacturing experience in the United States and Canada, including time with Toyota’s manufacturing production system. He has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and an MBA from Western New England University.
Wells will report to Emerson Leme, vice president of Starrett Industrial Products, North America.
