This year, the Worcester Business Journal marks its 25th anniversary.
In each print and online edition, we will highlight a major event in the Central Massachusetts business community between 1990 and 2014, and explore how that event impacts today's business scene.
Later this year, on Oct. 13, we'll publish a special 25th Anniversary commemorative edition and look at the region's companies and business leaders who have made a difference over the last quarter-century. We'll also look ahead to what the coming years could bring.
EVENT: The national collegiate men's Division 1 basketball tournament, aka “March Madness,” makes its debut at The Centrum in Worcester.
RECAP: And there was plenty to cheer about locally as the University of Massachusetts emerged as one of two teams to advance to the “Sweet Sixteen” following an overtime victory over Syracuse. Officials estimated that the six games at what is now called the DCU Center made an economic impact of about $3 million in the area.
FAST FORWARD: The tournament returned to the city in 2005. Will it return again? Maybe, especially if the city's new plan for downtown takes hold and generates more foot traffic and commerce. Meanwhile, the DCU Center has served several times as a locale for first-round games in the NCAA Division 1 men's hockey tournament.
