EVENT: Nypro Inc. of Clinton established a joint venture in Russia, just before the collapse of the Soviet Union.
RECAP: A year after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, which marked the beginning of the end of communism in Eastern Europe, U.S. plastics companies and manufacturers were advised to look to the region for growth opportunities. However, as Nypro founder Gordon Lankton told the WBJ in 2001 about the founding of Nypro Moscow: "I do it for idealistic reasons. Somebody's got to help those people. ... In a very small way, I'm hoping that we're setting some type of example on how they can get out of the mess that they're in."
FAST FORWARD: After he brought Nypro over there, Lankton brought some of Russia back to Central Massachusetts. In 2007, he founded the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton, with the largest collection of Russian icons publicly displayed outside Russia.
