Looking back at 2002: Airlines power down in Worcester

EVENT: Amid the continued fallout on air travel just months after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, three airlines - American Eagle, Delta and US Airways — reduced the number of flights from Worcester Regional Airport.

RECAP: It was the start of a turbulent decade for the airport. Later in the year, American Eagle and Delta stopped all service, leaving only US Airways. But the following year, it too, pulled out of Worcester, eliminating all commercial passenger service from the site. It would be two years before it would be restored, but under a new carrier.

FAST FORWARD: Activity at the airport, now under the full control of the Massachusetts Port Authority, has had its fits and starts after the entry and exit of Allegiant Air and Direct Air. But last year, JetBlue launched daily service to Florida. The airport is also in the process of securing a navigation system that would improve pilot visibility at the high-elevation site, where fog has proven to be an impediment to more activity.
