Southboro-based Protonex Technology Corp. has subcontracted with Millennium Cell Inc. of New Jersey to develop a fuel system for unmanned aerial vehicles.
Protonex is the prime fuel cell contractor for the Air Force Research Laboratory, and is developing the power system for the Air Force’s unmanned vehicles used for surveillance, search and rescue missions, and chemical and biological monitoring.
Millennium develops hydrogen battery technology.
Protonex is a licensee of Millennium’s “Hydrogen on Demand” system.
The joint project’s goal is to allow the unmanned aircraft to fly longer missions with greater payload than they can carry with battery powered systems.
