Two area high schools have won grants from the Lemelson-MIT InvenTeams Program, an initiative designed to encourage students to develop practical solutions for real world problems.
Acton-Boxborough High School in Acton won for its reuseable fire-extinguishing grenade, for which Cisco Systems is providing additional funding and mentoring support to the school’s system. The Bromfield School in Harvard developed a memory-assist device for individuals suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia and other memory-related illnesses. InvenTeams grants of up to $10,000 each helped the schools develop their ideas, while working with mentors from the community.
The Lemelson-MIT program will also match up to $2,000 in continuation grants to help further the development of the projects, or to begin a new one.Â
This year’s winners came from public, private and technical magnet high schools in urban, suburban and rural communities across the U.S.
