Local companies win Mass. SBA honors

Edd Cote Helder Machado (second from the left) now merges his military training with business at his company, Machado Consulting.

An abrasives maker and an information-technology solutions provider were both recognized as businesses of the year from the Massachusetts branch of the U.S. Small Business Administration, the agency announced Wednesday.

Machado Consulting, which provides information-technology solutions to small businesses, was named 2017 Veteran-Owned Business of the Year. The Worcester company is owned by Helder Machado, a 29-year combat veteran, recipient of the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, and a veteran of the Iraq war, where he was in the highly decorated Third Infantry Division, according to the SBA.

Machado was nominated by Barry Rosenbloom of TechSandBox of Hopkinton, an organization that Machado is actively involved with, specifically with efforts to reach out to veteran entrepreneurs like himself. His company has clients throughout the United States and North America, according to SBA.

SBA also awarded the 2017 Small Business Manufacturer of the Year for Massachusetts designation to Darmann Abrasive Products of Clinton. The company makes high-quality abrasives for the automotive, medical, maritime, bearing, and hydraulic industries and designs, manufactures, and markets fine grit, bonded abrasive products for superfinishing, precision grinding and honing applications. Revenues have increased quite a bit over the years as a result of diversified sales outside of the U.S.

Darmann produces 3 million stones and wheels per year in 1,500 custom sizes and specifications and has customers in 36 different countries.

The companies were judged on their success, as measured by sales and profits, the number of employment opportunities they create, how they develop and utilize creative business methods, and their entrepreneurial potential for long-term success, according to the SBA.
