Littleton radiation treatment firm Mevion Medical Systems has received federal clearance for a new proton therapy treatment system.
The new system, dubbed the S250i, is capable of delivering conformal radiation therapy treatments to cancer patients using pencil beam scanning technology. The company announced its clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Wednesday.
The design on the system, including HYPERSCAN pencil beam scanning, overcomes clinical challenges faced by the first pencil beam scanning systems, the company said.
The system will tailor the delivered radiation dose by painting tumors spot-by-spot and layer-by-layer with subatomic particles, the company said. Older systems delivered radiation much slower, which could undermine the high precision of treatment due to the tumor shifting due to normal functions like breathing.
Mevion said its new system can deliver a compact beam delivery path and reduce delivery time to less than five seconds in some cases.
MedStar Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C. will be the first hospital to use the new system, Mevion said.
