Lightower Expands Network in Chicago

Boxborough-based Lightower Fiber Networks said it’s expanding its broadband fiber network in the Chicago metro region.

The company said the investment is part of a strategy of aggressive network expansion, and will provide businesses, educational institutions and government groups with better data access starting in early 2014. The new rings throughout downtown Chicago and the suburbs of Oak Brook, Elk Grove and Franklin Park will provide services to hundreds of new commercial buildings and data centers, Lightower said.

“Chicago is a natural fit for Lightower as we continue our strategy of bringing all-fiber solutions to the places where organizations do business – more buildings are more data centers,” CEO Rob Shanahan said in a statement.

Lightower’s fiber-based network covers more than 20,000 route miles in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Chicago metro areas, providing access to more than 7,500 service locations.

The company employs roughly 230, with some 120 working out of its Boxoborough headquarters.
