By a comfortable margin of 61 to 39 percent, Leominster voters Tuesday approved plans for a slots parlor in the city.
Some 5,235 city residents voted in favor of the $200-million Jungle Road development, while 3,306 residents voted against the proposal.
“We are thrilled that the residents of Leominster have given us their support for this project,” said Joe Weinberg, a managing partner for Cordish Cos., in a statement. PPE Resorts, a subsidiary of Cordish, is the project developer.
PPE has until Oct. 4 to submit a final plan to the state’s gaming commission, which will decide in December where to site the state’s single slots parlor. Voters in Raynham and Plainville have already overwhelmingly approved slots proposals for their communities.
If the state selects the Leominster project, construction would then be allowed to begin on the 125,000-square-foot venue. The project would create at least 600 construction jobs and 500 to 700 permanent jobs.
PPE signed an agreement with Leominster in July that promises at least $3.8 million annually for the city. The developer would also also make a $250,000 grant payment to the city before construction starts at the 16-acre site.
