Leominster restaurateur branches out

The new downtown restaurant from the owner of one of Leominster’s most famed eateries is only about six weeks away.

Monument Grill restaurateur Donna Balletta said last week that the two-year project leading to the opening of Blue Marlin is coming to an end.

Located in leased space in the former home of the "Take a Bite" café on Central Street, the 80-seat restaurant will be "very playful and have more of a Caribbean surfer fun feel," according to Balletta.

"I’ve had calls every day," she said. "I’m probably asked [about it] at least 20 times a day by customers, friends, people at the grocery store."

Balletta said the new seafood restaurant will feature more moderate prices than the upscale, 8-year-old Grill, which specializes in steaks. Blue Marlin will be on the same side of the street, "within walking distance."

Daniel Melendez will serve as the executive chef.

Balletta said the idea for Blue Marlin was conceived two years ago, time which was spent going "through the proper bands and the license commission and so forth."

"We moved through," she said. "It took that long to get through all the proper channels. We’re through them and the walls are up."
