Leominster company fined for mishandling asbestos at Fitchburg school

Leominster restoration company SERVPRO will pay $67,000 in fines to settle claims of illegal asbestos work at a Fitchburg elementary school, according to a Monday press release from the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office.

The company allegedly violated the state’s Clean Air Act by removing ceiling tiles that contained asbestos, which is a carcinogen, at Crocker Elementary School in Fitchburg. The complaint said SERVPRO broke the tiles into pieces, removed them from ceilings, and dropped some out of a second-floor window into a dumpster, all without using legally required safety measures.

The asbestos contamination and clean-up closed the school for half a school year in 2018, requiring the relocation of all students, the release said.

Along with paying the fine, SERVPRO must ensure at least one employee at each of its work sites has completed asbestos training.

The City of Fitchburg has implemented a citywide plan for asbestos management in collaboration with the Attorney General’s office.
