Legislature Forms Manufacturing Caucus
The Massachusetts Legislature has formed a group of more than 50 lawmakers designed to address problems faced by the commonwealth’s manufacturing industry in filling technically demanding jobs with people who have the right skills.
The Manufacturing Caucus will be chaired by Rep. John Fernandes of Milford and Sen. Richard Moore of Uxbridge, both Democrats. The group will also include Sen. Michael Moore, D-Millbury, according to a statement from his office.
“Manufacturing is one of the top employers in Massachusetts and the industry only continues to grow,” Senate President Therese Murray, D-Plymouth, said. “It’s important that we continue to support and recognize our manufacturers as leaders in advancing the commonwealth’s economy and work to encourage a strong, competitive business climate.”
A statement from the Legislature said the formation of the caucus was timed to coincide with National Manufacturing Day, which will be observed Friday.
“Manufacturing is vitally important to the Massachusetts economy,” stated Sen. Richard Moore. “What were once dark, gritty factories, are now high-tech, innovative facilities that provide good paying jobs to skilled and educated employees. Partnering with manufacturing leaders to ensure that their companies have the tools and highly trained workforce they need to grow is an essential component of our strategy for economic growth.”
