Harrington Hospital in Southbridge was named a 2013 “Top Hospital” by The Leapfrog Group, making it one of seven in Massachusetts, and the only one in Central Massachusetts, to win that designation.
Harrington and the other 54 so-called “urban hospitals” that were deemed superior by the national nonprofit organization that focuses on providing hospital safety and quality information were measured using six standards set by Leapfrog. Top hospitals are required to:
-Meet Leapfrog’s standard for preventing medication errors;
-Operate ICUs that are managed exclusively by doctors who are board-certified in critical care medicine;
-Meet Leapfrog’s standards for high-risk surgeries and procedures;
- Achieve a minimum score on Leapfrog’s Hospital Recognition Program demonstrating high quality care and appropriate use of resources;
-Receive an “A” grade on Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Score report; and
-Meet overall standards of excellence set forth by Leapfrog’s Hospital Selection Committee.
Harrington, a 114-bed, acute-care hospital, has received an “A” on the last three Hospital Safety Score reports published by Leapfrog.
“We conduct regular organizational huddles multiple times per week to review and address any quality of care or potential safety issues. Many of our clinical departments conduct a daily safety huddle as well. We believe this is making a positive difference,” Harrington President and CEO Edward H. Moore said in a statement.
In addition to urban hospitals, Leapfrog also designated 22 rural hospitals and 13 children’s hospitals as top hospitals. Other Massachusetts facilities to make the list include Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington; Boston Children’s Hospital; Morton Hospital in Taunton; Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary in Boston; St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River and Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton.
