Law In His Blood

What does it take to be considered outstanding in your profession? To show dedication, initiative and innovation? Being recognized for those qualities is certainly a sign that you are in the right career for you.

Daniel Schwartz has the distinction of being named a finalist for the 2008 Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year Award by the American Bar Association. He also recently joined Pullman & Comley in Hartford as partner in the litigation department. It’s an opportunity to further distinguish himself in his profession.

Schwartz, 37, graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1992 with a degree in diplomatic history. He had aspirations for law, however, as he watched his grandfather as a lawyer in the Bronx. In 1995, he graduated from the Washington University in St. Louis Law School with awards for academic excellence.

“I started working immediately my last semester in law school for Sen. Lieberman in a fellowship program,” Schwartz said. “I got a chance to see what it was like and it was a great experience.”

A summer associate position at Day, Berry & Howard, known now as Day Pitney, turned into a nine-year position. Schwartz later was recruited by Epstein Becker & Green where he stayed for three years.

“At Pullman, I get a chance to get to my roots with the Hartford area,” he said. “The firm has an entrepreneurial spirit which is very infections and a good fit for me.”

Schwartz deals with labor and employment and commercial litigation and is the author of an employment law blog. The Avon resident and father of three is getting used to the new environment and colleagues at Pullman.

“The attorneys have a great sense of helping others that is genuine,” Schwartz said. “It’s the right mix of people that help each other get interesting and good results for clients.”

The success with his blog comes from keeping clients up-to-date on his specialized area of law and making connections through that communication.

“It’s been professionally rewarding for me to start this and I’ve found that a lot of people are interested in the subject,” Schwartz said. “I wouldn’t change what I’m doing but I have friends in journalism and I always thought it would have been fun to step in their shoes. It’s a good complement to my job at Pullman.”

Schwartz also keeps busy in town activities as a member of the Avon Democrats. He ran for local office for the zoning board of appeals and natural resources committee. Schwartz also chairs the March of Dimes Signature Chef Auction and the Conn. Bar Association’s Young Lawyers section.

“Law has been in my blood for a while and it’s nice to be at the place I am now,” he said.
