Lampin had zero injuries in 2017

Robin LeClaire is president of Uxbridge-based Lampin Corp.
Uxbridge-based precision parts manufacturer Lampin Corp. was awarded the 2017 National Tooling and Machining Association award last month. The award is given to companies adhering to strict federal workplace guidelines with low employee injury counts. President Robin LeClaire spoke with WBJ about the company’s standards.
What has Lampin done to make the workplace more safe?
We pretty much just follow the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration protocols. We have some senior machinists and operators who look out for the younger generation and make sure they are wearing protective eye wear and make sure they don’t see anything that could hurt anyone. We also welcome the insurance carriers to do audits on the floor.
How much time does the company spend on training?
We spend thousands of dollars a year and many hours on training. When we send someone to training for a specific machine they also go over the safety factors for that machine. We also spend a lot of one-on-one time with new employees including anyone in the office to advise how to be careful and be aware of the safety rules in the shop.
How many injuries has the company had vs. man hours in 2017?
We had zero injuries in 2017 based on 50 hour weeks with 32 to 36 employees.
How have those numbers changed over time?
We are very fortunate that we have not had any serious injuries over the years and our number have been consistent.
How many times has Lampin won the MTMA safety award?
Just once for 2017.
Manufacturing has seen a lot of technological advances, including automation. Has that made the industry any safer?
The new technology has really made manufacturing safer, but there still needs to be awareness and training.
