LakePharma opens Hopkinton biomanufacturing facility

LakePharma has purchased this Hopkinton building for $4.5 million.
The California company once rumored to be an anchor tenant at the Worcester Biomanufacturing Park is now fully operational at a facility in Hopkinton.
LakePharma, Inc., a biologics company based in San Carlos, said Wednesday it began commercially manufacturing plasmid DNA at its 35 South St. facility.
The company in December 2017 purchased the building, the former home of Bristol-Myers Squibb and Olympus Biotech, for $4.5 million.
The Hopkinton center allows the company,which collaborates on projects at all stages of biologics development, to provide fully-integrated solutions from vector design to manufacturing of plasmid DNA.
In a statement, CEO Hau Tu said the company will continue to build and develop the facility to meet clients’ needs.
“LakePharma has been relentless in capability expansion and service integration to provide our valued clients with end-to-end solutions,” he said. “The launch of the GMP-compliant suite dedicated to plasmid DNA manufacturing is the latest example of this commitment.”
The company was once thought to be the anchor tenant of the Worcester biotech campus at the former Worcester State Hospital site, but pulled out of that project in September 2017. Chinese biotech WuXi Biologics eventually pledged to be the anchor tenant at the Worcester campus.
LakePharma operates a facility in Worcester at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute campus and last year raised $30 million to open additional locations in Massachusetts and California.
