California biologics company LakePharma has launched a viral vector facility in its Gateway Park operations on Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s campus.
The Vector Center became commercially operational Tuesday, the company said in a press release. Viral vectors inject genetic materials into the body's cells as a form of gene therapy.
The center offers a comprehensive range of services including viral vector construction CAR-T and stable cell line engineering, preclinical process development, scale-up production and analytical development, LakePharma said.
Viral production systems including lentivirus, adeno-associated virus and baculovirus are available at the facility.
LakePharma was once heavily considering building a new facility at the site of the former Worcester State Hospital, where officials and the Worcester Business Development Corp. wanted to build a biomanufacturing campus. Instead, the company opted to open a biomanufacturing facility in an existing building in Hopkinton.
LakePharma acquired biologics firm Blue Sky BioServices in 2016, taking over its Gateway Park location.
LakePharma has maintained it still intends to grow its presence in Worcester despite siting the larger facility in Hopkinton.
