Kimberly Salmon

Age: 36
Title: Executive Director, Central Massachusetts Division
Company: American Heart Association
Company location: Framingham
Residence: Worcester

Career highlights:
I began my work in nonprofits back in 1989 at Prospect House Inc. I started my fundraising experience at Walker Home and School in 1991. I started as a direct care worker and then moved from there into the development office as an administrator and after a year I moved up into a development associate position. In 2000 I went to Two Ten Footwear Foundation as special events manager traveling all over the United States doing golf events in all the major cities and then in October 2003, I started my career at the American Heart Association as a corporate events director. I moved into my current position as executive director in 2005.

Community involvement:
I am very passionate about working with our youth. It is highly important to me as an African American woman that I stay involved in my community. I currently volunteer on the education committee at Second Baptist Church. I provide tutoring on Saturdays and run small fundraisers to support a scholarship fund and purchase back to school supplies and books for underprivileged youth. I also provide community health education at Second Baptist Church that focuses on African Americans’ risk factors and prevention of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer. I hold information sessions that focus around lifestyle changes and health education.

Biggest success:
I have three greatest professional accomplishments that have taken place in the past three years: the overall growth of the AHA’s Central Massachusetts Division both through revenue generating events and staff in the market; the significantly increased visibility today around congenital heart defects in our community; and the 300 percent growth over a three-year period of the Central Massachusetts Heart Ball.

Dream job:
I will eventually lead my own children’s based organization that focuses on the needs of inner-city and underprivileged youth.

Businessperson she most admires and why:
Dr. Peter Paige, vice chairman of emergency medicine at UMass Memorial. I admire him for his commitment and dedication to the cause. Paige has played a significant roll in opening many doors of opportunity and helped me to build great corporate partnerships in the Central Massachusetts market.
