Keolis to crack down on uncollected fares

Grant Welker A commuter rail train pulls into Worcester's Union Station. Operators Keolis will begin a crackdown on uncollected fares next week.

The Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority’s commuter rail operating partner announced Friday it is bringing back a program to reduce fare evasion next week.

The program, Fare is Fair, is a random ticket check on all boarding lines at random stations held six to eight times a year, said Keolis, the commuter rail operators.

“During these events, ticket verification agents educate riders on ticketing options and ensure that passengers have an appropriate and activated ticket prior to boarding a train,” Keolis said in a press release.

The event has been held at several stations in the past during mid-week peak periods.

Starting Tuesday, the events will be held daily throughout the commuter rail network, beginning with off-peak times then as passengers become more aware these will move to peak commute and outlying stations.

The crackdown on fares will begin next week in Boston at North Station midday on Tuesday and Wednesday, Back Bay station midday Thursday and South Station midday on Friday, the company said.

Future schedules will be announced as appropriate, Keolis said.

In a Keolis survey, only two-thirds of passengers said their fare was collected all the time. The company said it loses millions of dollars each year due to uncollected fares.

Passengers will not be unreasonably inconvenienced by the crackdown and trains will not be held for the activities, Keolis said.
