Kelly’s Roast Beef, a chain of restaurants which started as a hot dog shack on Revere Beach in 1951, opened a new franchise location in Worcester on Tuesday.

The franchise is located at 70 Gold Star Blvd. and run by AAM15 Management, a private equity investment and management company based in Burlington.

The location is in a 18,100-square-foot retail building announced in late 2022, replacing a former Volvo dealership. Other businesses in the plaza include a Jersey Mike’s Subs location, a ConvenientMD Urgent Care & Walk-in Clinic, and a Carsmetics auto body shop, according to Google listings.

Known for its titular roast beef as well as fried seafood and burgers, the franchise has been eyeing a Worcester location since at least 2020

The new Worcester restaurant is Kelly’s 12th and its only location in Central Massachusetts; The franchise had a Natick location at the site of Jordan’s Furniture, which closed in January 2018, according to Natick Patch.

Kelly’s other New England locations are two inside Boston’s Logan Airport and single locations in Dedham, Danvers, Medford, Saugus, the franchise’s original location at Revere Beach, and Salem, New Hampshire, according to the company’s website.

The chain has expanded to Florida, with locations there being operated by RAVentures, the Westford-based company operating brands including Apex Entertainment Centers, with its location in Marlborough, and 110 Grill, a restaurant chain focused on modern American Cuisine with locations in five states. RAVentures operates three Kelly’s locations in Florida, with three more in the pipeline.

The original Kelly’s was founded in 1951 by Frank McCarthy and Raymond Carey, who named the restaurant after a mutual friend, a Dorchester-based florist named Thomas Kelly. The company claims to have invented the roast beef sandwich.
