Jury: Candela Patent Claim Only Skin Deep

A U.S. District Court jury in Texas has ruled that Burlington-based Palomar Medical Technologies Inc.'s products do not infringe upon a patent held by Candela Corp. of Wayland.

Candela claimed handsets that are part of one of Palomar's cosmetic laser systems infringed on several Candela patents. According to Palomar, Candela dropped all but one of the patent claims before trial.

Candela said the company strongly disagrees with the jury's verdict and was "evaluating the company's options."

The two cosmetic laser companies have two other patent suits pending.

In one lawsuit, Palomar claims Candela has infringed upon certain laser hair removal patents. Candela is the plaintiff in the other.

The two companies develop laser systems for cosmetic procedures such as hair removal, wrinkle reduction, tattoo removal and "body sculpting."
