Journal Register shutters New Britain facility

The Journal Register Co.announced today that it is mothballing its printing and production operations in New Britain, part of an expected $500,000 in cost-saving measures. The shutdown, beginning Monday, affects the New Britain Herald, Middletown Press and Bristol Press newspapers, as well as the combined Sunday Herald-Press, all of which will be printed on JRC's New Haven Register presses. JRC earlier this year announced plans to sell the Middletown Press building and move that newspaper's staff to smaller, leased space. The New Britain equipment, which the company says is “now redundant,” will be moved to another facility or sold. The Yardley, Pa.-based company sold its Mass. and R.I. papers earlier this year. It has seen its stock value fall from over $9 per share last summer to $4.23 earlier this morning.
