The unemployment rate in 18 of the state's 22 labor markets was up in July as the government shed 40,900 jobs, according to the state Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The private sector added 24,800 jobs during the month.
Only the Barnstable, Pittsfield and Haverhill-North Andover-Amesbury markets saw job gains.
Worcester's unemployment rate increased from 9.6 percent in June to 10.1 percent in July.
Framingham's rate increased from 6.9 percent to 7.2 percent.
Unemployment rates in two North Worcester markets ended July above 12 percent. In Athol, the unemployment rate was 12.3 percent after finishing June at 11.9 percent. In the Leominster-Fitchburg-Gardner market, the jobless rate was 12.1 percent. In June, it was 11.4 percent.
