Worcester's unemployment rate hit 6.5 percent in November compared to 6.2 percent in October and 4.7 percent in November 2007, the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development said today.
And the city wasn't the only one in Central Massachusetts to see sharp monthly and year-over-year unemployment increases. Fitchburg's November unemployment rate was 8 percent, up from 7 percent in October and 5.3 percent in November 2007.
Similarly, Southbridge's unemployment rate increased to 8.3 percent from 7.3 percent last month and from 5.2 percent the previous year. In Winchendon, the unemployment rate spiked to 8 percent from 6.6 percent last month and 5 percent a year ago.
Not all was grim, though. Several towns with predictably low unemployment rates saw small increases during the month. For example, Natick, which had a rate of 3.5 percent unemployed last month, saw its rate increase to 3.7 percent in November. The town's November 2007 unemployment rate was 2.6 percent.
The state's November unemployment rate rose to 5.9 percent from 5.5 percent in October, the labor department reported last week.
