Job seekers missing the point

Job seekers are doing more research into the firms to which they apply, but they're not putting that research to its best use, according to results of a recent Accountemps survey.

Accountemps, a temporary employment agency for the accounting industry, found that 79 percent of the executives they polled said job candidates display at least some knowledge of the company or industry. That's up from 59 percent in a 1997 suvey on the same topic.

However, just 44 percent of executives said job candidates use that knowledge where it matters most: the cover letter.

Accountemps noted that the cover letter is often what prompts a hiring manager to call a job candidate for an interview. Demonstrating some knowledge of the company, the position or the industry in a cover letter shows "resourcefulness and a sincere interest in the job," Accountemps said.
