Job Seekers Get Creative, Desperate

The recession has made the job market very competitive, and job seekers are going to great and unusual lengths to get noticed, according to a recent OfficeTeam survey.

OfficeTeam, a temporary staffing agency focused on administrative positions, asked hiring executives to share the most unusual thing they've seen job applicants do to get attention.

Executives said candidates have brought hiring managers milk and cookies, and had a resume delivered in a pizza box. Another candidate stood outside the office of his prospective employer from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day for a month until he was hired. One job candidate wrote a press release announcing she had been hired and used that as her cover letter.

OfficeTeam said job seekers must be careful about using gimmicks to get attention. Executives may see some as a sign of initiative and creativity and others as a mark of desperation.
