Job Openings Mostly Flat In March

Across the country, the number of job openings on the last business day of March totaled 3.8 million, unchanged from March 2012 and down slightly from February 2013, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

In the Northeast, there were 666,000 openings at the end of March, up from 659,000 a year ago. During the month, 638,000 were hired in the Northeast, which accounted for 2.5 percent of total employment in the region. Last March, 656,000 were hired, which represented 2.6 percent of the employed. The national hiring rate was slightly higher, at 3 percent.

Quit rates were also flat in the Northeast and across the country. In the Northeast, 258,000 people quit their jobs in March, a rate of 1 percent. The U.S. quit rate was 1.5 percent.
