After a devastating hurricane season in the Caribbean, the city and the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce are hosting a job and resource fair for the hundreds of evacuees now living in the city.

The chamber announced Thursday it would hold the job fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Worcester multicultural nonprofit Centro on 11 Sycamore St.

“Worcester is now home to more than 300 evacuees from Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands,” the chamber said in a press release. “Many of these evacuees are now eager to find work, have excellent work histories and degrees/certifications from their home areas, and speak fluent Spanish. This fair can help them find work, while helping our employers fill their open positions.”

Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico in September, killing at least 64. Media organizations lile the New York Times and the Center for Investigative Journalism have disputed the number of fatalities, with some estimating the number to be more than 1,000.

Together, the storms have caused damages that could be worth an estimated $200 billion, Moody’s Investor Service said in September.
