JetBlue’s Q2 revenue, earnings soar

Second-quarter revenue and earnings for JetBlue Airways Corp., the only commercial passenger airline that flies out of Worcester, took off as higher traffic pushed up revenue to $1.5 billion for the quarter and the company benefited from the sale of a subsidiary.

JetBlue reported a profit of $230 million, or 68 cents a share, up from $36 million, or 11 cents a share, a year earlier. The results were bolstered by a $242 million gain from the sale of subsidiary, LiveTV LLC.

The company also reported what it said was record second-quarter operating revenue of $1.5 billion, up from $1.3 billion for the same period a year ago.
Passenger revenue per seat mile — an important financial indicator in the airline industry — grew 6 percent for the second quarter, and overall passenger traffic increased 5.7 percent, the company said.
