JetBlue's Arrival Offers Rebirth For Worcester Airport

After a drought of nearly 20 months, commercial passenger air traffic will return to Central Massachusetts next week when JetBlue begins daily flights to Florida.

Yes, this is a baby step for the long-beleaguered Worcester Regional Airport, which has struggled to regain its wings after the lone previous carrier, DirectAir, ceased operations in March 2012. But, thanks to the Massachusetts Port Authority, which bought the airport from the city in 2010, Worcester is welcoming an established, well-heeled carrier with a record of solid growth and profits. This is a far cry from the marginal Direct Air operation.

Worcester may be just one more destination for JetBlue right now, but its arrival offers a rebirth of potential for the airport. We hope this new marriage is built to last.
