Questions about health care costs and quality are in the news more and more these days, but Dr. Jennifer Daley has been improving hospitals' quality systems for three decades. She's worked at Tufts Medical Center, Tenet Healthcare Corp. and Partners Community Healthcare Inc. Now UMass Memorial has tapped her as its new COO. In this Q&A she talks about moving from a physician network to an academic health center, and ending up in upper management instead of direct patient care.
Vital Stats:
Age: 60
Residence: Lexington MA
Family: Five children, ages 12 to 40
Education: Bachelor's from Brown University; MD from Tufts University; General Medicine Fellowship
Previous job: Chief Medical Officer, Partners Community Healthcare Inc., Boston
Start date at new job: March 22
Q. What made you decide to take the new job?
A. A wonderful team of caring people dedicated to the best possible patient care.
Q. What's your impression of your new coworkers and your workplace so far?
A. Friendly, hard-working, dedicated, a real community of caregivers.
Q. What challenges do you expect to find in your new position?
A. Delivering the best possible care to every patient and their families, knowing that we need to reduce the cost of care overall for society.
Q. How different is this job from your previous position?
A. I was the Chief Medical Officer of a 6000-physician network. Leading a major academic health center is different but the goals and values are the same: the best possible patient care.
Q. How close is this to what you imagined in high school you'd end up doing?
A. I wanted to be a doctor for as long as I can remember, but I always thought I would be an internist practicing in a community on the coast of Maine. Helping to lead a major academic health center wasn't even close!
Q. What do you hope to be doing 10 years from now?
A. Working at UMass Memorial Medical Center!
