International clothing store chain Uniqlo will open its first permanent Massachusetts store in Natick later this year, the company announced last week.
Uniqlo will open a store August 29 in the Natick Mall, the same day the Japanese retailer plans to unveil a store at the Mall at Chestnut Hill in Newton. Four other stores in and around Boston will open in late 2014 and early 2015, the company said.
A pop-up store will operate out of Boston’s Faneuil Hall Marketplace from early this summer until spring 2015.
“We are pleased to introduce the UNIQLO experience to Boston,” Larry Meyer, CEO of UNIQLO USA, said in a statement. “We believe our everyday basics of exceptional value and functional apparel will delight them (Bostonians) and contribute meaningfully to their lives.”
The chain has 20 U.S. stores in San Francisco, New York, New Jersey and Connecticut and more than 1,300 across 16 countries. UNIQLO opened its first store in 1984 in Hiroshima, Japan.
UNIQLO also plans to expand into Philadelphia and Los Angeles in the coming months.
