Home sales in January rose on a year-to-year basis for the second month in a row, according to the Massachusetts Association of Realtors.
Sales of single-family homes increased 13 percent last month compared to January 2010 to 2,147 transactions. In December, home sales increased 5.4 percent. January home sales were off more than 30 percent compared to December 2010, however.
Median prices of single-family homes also continued their slide, with prices off 5 percent from where they were a year ago to $284,500.
The condominium market also continues to struggle, with January year-over-year sales off 5.2 percent and off 35 percent from December.
Meanwhile, Boston-based real estate tracking firm The Warren Group reported that sales only increased 5 percent year-over-year in January to 2,190 transactions. The Warren Group said home prices fell 7 percent year over year.
The MAR only counts transactions involving certified Realtors.
