Iron Mountain: Data Not Protected Against Disaster

Iron Mountain, the data storage company with operations in Northborough and Southborough, says more than half of organizations lose data when a disaster strikes.

The company surveyed 1,200 data security managers and found that 68 percent see disaster recovery as their greatest challenge. After a disaster, only 44 percent were able to recover information. The biggest reason was losing data was that it took too long to recover, but 15 percent of companies said they didn't have the files they needed backed up at all.

Less than half of respondents keep their data backed up offsite, where it can be protected against events that affect the company offices. Only 17 percent have a formal plan for how different types of data should be retained or destroyed.

Only 20 percent of companies used cloud technology, and those that did were most likely to be small organizations with less data.
