Oxford-based laser maker IPG Photonics said it has successfully tested a 10-kilowatt laser that is the largest of its kind.
The laser produces 9.6 kilowatts in a single mode and through a single fiber. The company said it can be used in remote cutting, welding and directed energy applications.
IPG Laser in Germany developed the laser, which is considered the world’s brightest industrial solid-state laser. The company said it would offer the laser as a turn-key package. It is intended for heavy industrial use, cutting and welding for the automotive, aerospace, shipbuilding and other industries.
For the first quarter, IPG reported net income of $1 million on sales of $45 million. For the same period the prior year, the company reported income of $8.1 million on $53 million in sales.
