Oxford laser manufacturer IPG Photonics is planning a Marlborough expansion after buying more than eight acres of mostly vacant land near its Marlborough facility.
Plans for the project haven’t been finalized, but the city’s Site Plan Committee has recently had preliminary discussions on a project, according to Krista Holmi, Marlborough’s engineering and planning board administrator.
In November, IPG purchased mostly vacant land at 686 Forest Road for almost $1.9 million, which is just a short distance away from its location at 377 Simarano Drive.
The company last February also purchased land surrounding the Simarano Drive property for $1.8 million.
James Hiller, the company’s vice president of investor relations, said in May the company was planning to invest in its global production capabilities to meet growing demand for its products. That includes expansions at both its Oxford and Marlborough facilities.
The company has already announced plans for a $70-million, 630,000-square-foot expansion in Oxford where it wants to add 400 new jobs.
IPG has not yet detailed the size of its Marlborough expansion.
Since 2016, IPG has purchased $54.52 million worth of land and property to facilitate its planned expansions in both municipalities.
