Five independent insurance agencies in Central Massachusetts have joined with six others in the state to create an alliance designed to improve marketing and purchasing power.
The group, which will be called Alliance Main Street LLC, brings together two longstanding groups of agencies: Alliance Berkshire and Main Street Insurance Agencies, according to a statement from the group.
The five local agencies involved in the alliance are: Halstead Insurance Agency of Fitchburg, Herlihy Group of Worcester, Mackintire Insurance Agency of Westborough, Marsh-Kemp Insurance Agency of Worcester and O'Connor & Co. Insurance Agency of Dudley. The other six agencies are based in Agawam, Pittsfield, South Hadley, Adams, Northampton and Great Barrington. Together, the 11 firms hold about $120 million in premiums, the group said.
"Together, our 11 agencies have greater power and can better serve the insurance needs of each of our agencies' clients," said Richard J. Webber, president of Alliance Berkshire.
Webber added that deregulation and sweeping changes in the insurance industry have resulted in a more competitive environment that makes it more difficult for smaller, independent agencies to gain access to some markets.
