Acton medical device company Insulet will begin powering its corporate headquarters and manufacturing facility with solar energy, the company announced on Wednesday.
Beginning in January, the company worked to cover its manufacturing facility with 2,800 solar panels, each measuring 5.5-feet long by 3.3-feet wide. The system has a 900-kilowatt capacity, which the company said was enough electricity to power 30 average-sized U.S. homes daily. Insulet received approval this week from the Town of ACton to turn the system, according to the announcement.
"We understand our responsibility to help protect the environment, and this is another important step toward reducing our carbon footprint," said Chuck Alpuche, executive vice president and chief operating officer, in a statement.
Insulet is known for its tubeless insulin pump technology with its Omnipod Insulin Management System, a wearable device with disposable pods providing up to three days of insulin delivery without using a needle.
