Index: Central Mass. business confidence falls in September

The Central Massachusetts Business Confidence Index fell into pessimistic territory in September after a positive July and August.

The index, conducted by the Associated Industries of Massachusetts with the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce fell from 50.9 to 46.9 in September. A score above 50 indicates optimism.

The statewide index conducted by AIM also fell from 52.4 to 49.8 in September, according to a Tuesday press release from AIM.

Respondents to the groups surveys cited economic stress caused by inflation and mounting stress among their concerns.

“The battle against inflation is not yet won, so the Fed must remain vigilant. At the same time, there is a better balance between supply and demand across the board, in goods, services and labor markets,” said State Street Global Advisors Chief Economist Simona Mocuta in the press release. “This helps the ongoing disinflation process.”
