In April, coronavirus cases in Worcester County rose from 563 to 5,550

Coronavirus cases in Worcester County have risen by 237, with 13 new deaths, according to Massachusetts Department of Public Health data released Friday.

Cases and deaths soared during April locally and elsewhere.

Worcester County cases rose nearly tenfold, beginning the month with 563 cases and ended with 5,550, with deaths rising from eight to 265. Cases in the city of Worcester jumped from 165 to 2,071, and statewide cases spiked from 7,738 to 62,205. National cases rose from 213,200 at the start of April to 1.1 million at the end.

The new cases Friday are a 4% rise from Thursday and add to the 5,787 total cases. Massachusetts has seen 2,106 new cases, a 4% increase, bringing the total to 64,311. 

Friday’s 13 new deaths increased Worcester County’s coronavirus death toll to 278. Statewide, there were 154 new deaths bringing the total overall to 3,716.

The Department of Public Health reported 13,989 new coronavirus tests performed with a total of 289,636 as of Friday.

The City of Worcester reported 2,190 cases Friday. This is a 6% increase from Thursday with 119 new cases.

Confirmed positive cases among workers at the Walmart Supercenter at Tobias Boland Way in Worcester have increased. The city announced 23 positive cases among workers Wednesday, with subsequent testing bringing the case count on Friday to 61.
The store, which the city ordered closed Wednesday, remains shut.

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester report 284 cases with 107 coronavirus patients in intensive care. One new death was reported Friday to bring both facilities’ death toll to 107, and three new employees tested positive bringing the total to 175. 

The DCU Center field hospital in Worcester had 21 patients Friday.

Nationally, cases continue to rise close to 1.1 million cases with more than 64,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Throughout the world, cases have risen to more than 3.3 million with 237,000 deaths.
