An illegally operated radio station in Worcester has agreed to cease operations and surrender all equipment after the federal government sought an injunction to shut the station down.
According to the U.S. State Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts, the Christian Praise International Church and Vasco Oburoni were operating an unlicensed radio station on 97.1 MHz and a previous unlicensed station on 102.3 MHz.
The Federal Communications Commission issued multiple warnings and a forfeiture order for $15,000 against Oburoni. He agreed to a payment plan but then began operating on a different frequency, again without a license.
Those broadcasts allegedly interfered with other licensed operators.
In addition to agreeing to cease broadcasts and giving up his equipment, Oburoni and the church agreed to allow the FCC to inspect the premises and seize any broadcasting equipment if any other activity is suspected.
If a violation is found, Oburoni and the church could face a $75,000 fine.
