IDC Handicaps Tablet Sales

Framingham technology analysis company International Data Corp. estimates that 17 million tablets shipped in 2010, a number that could grow to 44 million in 2011.

The company released its third-quarter tablet computer data, which showed that Apple's iPad represented about 90 percent of tablet sales in the third quarter. Quarterly tablet sales were up 45 percent compared to the third quarter of 2009 with 4.8 million units shipped.

Sales of e-readers, which are a form of a tablet, grew 40 percent in the third quarter compared to the second quarter with 2.7 million units shipped. About three-quarters of the international e-reader sales were in the U.S., IDC analysts said.
