Internet security provider Corero Network Security of Hudson will open a research and development center in Scotland, the company announced.
The new operation, to be located in Edinburgh, adds network security and software-defined networking expertise, according to the company. Corero provides security solutions against distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks.
DDoS attacks seek to overwhelm online services with too much web traffic. A study of European companies by Neustar – the third annual European Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks & Impact Report – found that companies surveyed estimated hourly losses close to $150,000 while they were under attack. The report also found that more than one-third of DDoS attacks affected businesses for more than 24 hours.
“Attackers are continuing to leverage DDoS attacks in new ways that overwhelm networks, circumvent existing security tools, and impact service availability,” Ashley Stephenson, CEO of Corero Network Security, said in a statement.
