Hudson to demolish vacant factory for parking with $400K state grant

With the help of a $400,000 state grant, a vacant former metal plating factory in Hudson is being demolished to make way for a parking lot to support the town’s thriving downtown business district.
The building at 15 Broad St., the former home of H. LaRosee and Sons, was ordered closed by the town in 2017 due to a variety of code violations. The business was then sold to Worcester Manufacturing, Inc.
After its closure, the building still contained various chemicals that had local, state and federal officials concerned. As crews were cleaning up the site in July 2017, a chemical spill caused a HAZMAT team to respond to the site.
The town has since been working to clean up the site and repurpose the space. That proposed use appears to be a parking lot for the town’s bustling downtown district, according to the state’s Executive Office of Housing & Economic Development, which awarded the grant through its Site Readiness Program on Thursday.
A total of $2.3 million in grants were awarded to nine other projects, including $100,000 to help with Fitchburg’s acquisition of a sandpit site on Airport Road.
