Hudson gets $650K for rotary improvements

Hudson has seen a spike in new downtown storefronts and soon the town will have a new rotary to help with the neighborhood's safety and aesthetics.
The state announced a $650,000 grant Tuesday from its MassWorks infrastructure program to remake the rotary where Routes 85 and 62 meet. The intersection is just outside a few of downtown's best-known eateries, including Rail Trail Flatbread Co., New City Microcreamery and Victor's 50's Diner.
The project will redesign the rotary to reduce vehicular speeds through the intersection and improve pedestrian safety, the state said.
The new grant follows a larger one last year in which the state gave $1.2 million to remake South Street, which runs parallel to downtown's main drag, Main Street.
Hudson business and property owners are making their own investments.
More than 100 properties along and just off Main Street are part of the town's business improvement district, which takes a small surcharge on property bills and diverts them to marketing, new signs, events or aesthetic improvements. Leaders of the district, which began collecting revenue early this year and expects annual payments in the range of $120,000, have considered decorative light poles, flower boxes, and better signage to help visitors find parking spots, among other improvements.
