Westborough-based Lithium-ion battery maker Boston-Power's long-lasting Sonata notebook computer battery will be available as an upgrade option for HP notebook PCs in early 2009.
The deal, which is the result of a three-year relationship between Boston-Power and HP, represents the first time a United States-based battery company has successfully sold its product to a top provider of laptops, the company said. The deal puts Boston-Power in direct competition with battery powerhouses like Sony, Sanyo, Panasonic, LG and Samsung.
HP will offer the batteries as the "Enviro Series," and they'll be compatible with the majority of HP notebook PCs. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The arrangement makes HP the first major PC manufacturer to offer the environmentally friendly Sonata line of batteries, which Boston-Power says will keep notebook computers running like new for three years.
