Weekday hourly Commuter Rail service will return to the Framingham/Worcester line out of Worcester’s Union Station starting on Oct. 17.
The new fall/winter schedule for the Commuter Rail was released Monday by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority. It is available for viewing at mbta.com/cr.
Hourly trains out of Union Station in Worcester were temporarily removed to accommodate the construction on a platform at the station. The construction has reached a point where the hourly service can resume, including for the Heart to Hub express trains.
Starting on Oct. 17, trains will depart out of Worcester starting at 4:15 a.m. and leave regularly until 10:25 p.m.
“We are pleased to announce a Fall/Winter schedule that will safely and reliably provide more service,” Abdellah Chajai, CEO of Keolis Commuter Services, said in a Monday press release. “Typically twice a year we adjust the Commuter Rail schedule, which gives us the opportunity to think critically about the service we are providing. We know our passengers have options, and we are constantly striving to improve.”
Some of the changes to the schedule serve to accommodate a rising ridership, which recently surpassed 75% of the pre-COVID average for the first time since early 2020.
"Commuter Rail ridership has been climbing monthly, and we're excited to welcome back our customers who were using the system less frequently during the pandemic," MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak said in the same press release. "With our partner Keolis, we developed a schedule that has become increasingly popular among commuters, and we'll continue to plan for a future that includes increased capacity and additional service."
